When the snow melts we always discover something; a lost mitten, forgotten toys.  This year we discovered something entirely different.DSC_0002My best guess is voles (sounds so much more inviting than mice).  More than a few by all appearances.

DSC_0005Sigh… Anyone know of a good way to get rid of them?

Voles are a kind of mouse that rarely goes indoors. I don’t want to even consider that the critters may be in my house. Aack!

Oh wow! I thought they would be hiding and cozy from the cold and snow. cheeky little things sneaking around. I don’t use mulch in my garden areas because these little guys love to munch it. I also wrap the bottom of any trees since they will chew on the bark. I know someone who used mouse traps to rid their lawn of voles. Use peanut butter and place them where they travel most. (widest path, or where you find their feces). I know there are poisons too – but if you have children, pets or other wild animals, then they would be threatened. You can also get “live traps”, but then you have to figure out where to release the ones you catch.

This was in our front yard where the grass is always kept short! I don’t want to even imagine what the grape arbor looks like under the snow. Yikes.

I’ll give the peanut butter and mouse traps a try. Can’t hurt!

Cool design, but unfortunate what made it! Good luck getting rid of them.

voles are lovely little creatures. especially the star nosed vole. “From the moment that it touches insect larva with its proboscis, it takes just 230 milliseconds to check that it is edible and gobble it up. This is the fastest known reaction time in the animal kingdom, taking less than half the 650 milliseconds that a human driver needs to brake for a red light.”

they eat the larvae in the lawn so if you’re one who likes grass lawns, they’re helping that.

I’ve not seen anything like that before, but voles sound pretty plausible. Thanks for stopping by and if you like hiking or even just a reason to get out for a walk geocaching can be a lot of fun :)

Sorry you have to deal with that, but they do make for interesting patterns in the snow.

Are they the same as moles? we had something like that here, and my cat can catch them! That’s one way to get rid of them – lol

Cool design in the snow anyway :)

Gah! No thanks. I’m still trying to pretend that they aren’t really there.
